What is Bhramari Pranayama?
Bhramari Pranayama, also called “humming bee breath,” is a breathing exercise in yoga. You breathe in deeply and then make a humming sound while breathing out. It helps calm your mind and body.
Benefits of Bhramari for Stress Relief:
- Activates Relaxation Response
The humming sound stimulates the vagus nerve, which helps your body relax. It reduces the “fight-or-flight” stress response and supports calmness.
- Lowers Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
Regular practice helps reduce heart rate and blood pressure—signs that stress is lowering. It also improves heart rate variability, a sign of better stress control.
- Reduces Stress Hormones
Bhramari helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone), which can reduce anxiety and irritability.
- Improves Focus and Mental Clarity
The humming sound helps clear the mind, making it easier to concentrate and stay focused.
- Soothes the Brain
The vibration from the humming stimulates the brain, boosts oxygen flow, and promotes a calm, balanced emotional state.
- Improves Sleep and Mood
Bhramari helps calm the body and mind, which can improve sleep. It also raises GABA levels, a brain chemical that helps you feel relaxed and reduces anxiety.
- Builds Mindfulness
Focusing on your breath and the sound brings your attention to the present, helping reduce overthinking and stress.
How to Practice Bhramari:
- Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and eyes closed.
- Breathe in deeply through your nose.
- Close your ears with your thumbs, and rest your fingers gently on your face.
- Breathe out slowly while making a soft humming sound like a bee.
- Repeat this 5–10 times or for up to 5 minutes daily.
Precautions:
Don’t do Bhramari if you have a serious ear infection or feel very uncomfortable in closed spaces.
Always practice on an empty stomach.
